Your phone fell in water. Do these 5 things in the next 10 minutes
The first minutes decide whether a wet phone survives. Here is exactly what to do — and the popular tricks that make things worse.

Switch it off. Now.
Water conducts electricity. A powered board with water on it is actively short-circuiting; a powered-off board is just wet. If the phone is still on, switch it off immediately and resist every urge to "check if it still works". Every power-on is a fresh round of electrical roulette.
Do not charge it
Charging a wet phone is the fastest way to convert a recoverable board into a dead one. Even if the phone shows a moisture warning and refuses to charge, don't override it with wireless charging — that heats the board too.
Dry what you can reach
Take off the case, remove the SIM tray, and wipe the outside with a dry cloth. Hold the phone with the ports facing down and gently shake once or twice. Don't blow into the ports — your breath is humid — and don't use a hair dryer, which pushes moisture deeper and cooks adhesives.
Skip the rice
Rice absorbs moisture from the air around the phone, not from under the shielded connectors inside it, where the damage actually happens. Meanwhile the hours the phone spends in the rice bag are exactly the hours corrosion uses to take hold. Silica gel sachets are marginally better — but neither reaches the inside of the board.
Get it opened professionally — fast
The only real treatment is opening the phone, disconnecting the battery, and cleaning the board properly — ideally in an ultrasonic bath. Done within a day, the odds are genuinely good. Done after a week of "it seemed fine", we're often fighting established corrosion instead of preventing it. If the liquid was sugary (chai, cola) or salty, treat it as doubly urgent: those residues corrode faster than clean water.
The delayed-death trap
The most common water-damage story we hear at both our branches: "It fell in water two weeks ago, worked fine, and died yesterday." That is corrosion finishing its work. If your phone got wet — even if it seems perfect — a preventive inspection and internal clean costs little and can save the board.
