Battery health, explained: when to worry and when to replace

Every lithium battery is born with a budget of charge cycles — roughly 500 to 800 full cycles for most phones. Spend them and capacity fades: the phone that once lasted a day now begs for a charger by evening. This isn't a defect; it's chemistry. Screens and boards can last many years — batteries are designed to be replaced along the way.

What "battery health" means

iPhones show it directly (Settings → Battery → Battery Health): the number is today's maximum capacity versus new. Most Androids don't show a percentage natively, but the symptoms speak clearly enough: rapid drops from 100%, sudden shutdowns at 20–30%, and heavy heating during normal use all say the same thing.

The habits that age batteries fastest

Heat is the real enemy — more than charging habits. Gaming while charging, phones on car dashboards, cheap uncertified fast chargers, and thick cases that trap heat during charging all accelerate wear. Repeatedly draining to 0% hurts too. Keeping the phone between roughly 20% and 90% most days is genuinely good advice; obsessing beyond that is not worth the anxiety.

The swelling warning

If your screen or back panel is lifting, the battery is swelling with gas — a fire risk, not a cosmetic issue. Stop charging the phone, don't press on the bulge, and get it to a professional bench promptly. Swollen cells need careful extraction with the right tools.

When replacement makes sense

Below about 80% health — or with sudden shutdowns, all-day heating, or swelling — replacement is the honest fix. It costs a fraction of a new phone and typically restores full-day life. One caveat: sometimes fast drain is a rogue app or a failing charging port, not the battery. A proper diagnosis first means you don't buy a battery you didn't need — which is exactly how we work at both branches.
