Cracked screen? Your real options, honestly compared

Glass-only vs full display, original vs compatible panels, and when a repair isn't worth the money.

Written by the Hash Digipoint technical team, from daily work at our Lucknow and Varanasi benches.

First: what actually broke?

A phone "screen" is a sandwich: protective glass on top, a touch layer, and the display panel beneath. Cracked glass with perfect picture and touch is one situation; a black or striped display is another; ghost touch is a third. The repair — and its price — depends on which layer failed, which is why a bench inspection beats a phone-call quote.

Glass-only repair

On some models the top glass can be separated and replaced alone, keeping your original display — the cheapest route when it applies. The catch: on many modern phones the glass and OLED are laminated so tightly that separation risks the panel, and the option quietly disappears. We'll tell you plainly whether your model qualifies.

Full assembly: original vs compatible

Original / service-pack panels behave exactly like the screen your phone shipped with — colour, brightness, smoothness and features like True Tone or in-display fingerprint all intact. High-quality compatible panels cost meaningfully less and serve older or budget phones well, with honest trade-offs in brightness or refresh rate. The wrong choice is the mystery panel with no stated grade — the market is full of them.

The bent-frame trap

If the drop bent the phone's frame even slightly, a new screen fitted onto it will live under constant flex — and cracks again weeks later, usually "on its own". A good repair trues the frame first. If a shop doesn't check the frame, the new screen's lifespan is luck.

When repair isn't worth it

When the display quote approaches half the phone's market value — common with older flagships — think twice. Sometimes the smarter money is putting that amount toward a certified pre-owned upgrade instead; your cracked phone still has trade-in value as-is. An honest shop does that arithmetic with you; at Hash Digipoint it's a standard part of the quote conversation.

Protect the investment

After any screen replacement: a proper tempered glass fitted dust-free, a case with raised edges, and remember that opening a sealed phone always reduces factory water resistance — treat every repaired phone as rain-shy.
